A concert by artists from Catania, with great public participation, concluded the first day in the pedestrian area of Piazza Federico di Svevia and in the area surrounding the Ursino Castle late yesterday evening. A moment of sharing promoted by the Municipal Administration which marks the new life of the area, one of the most frequented by tourists due to the manor built by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century, residence of the Sovereigns of Sicily of the Aragonese dynasty including Frederick III, today home to the Civic Museum of the Etna city. Under the much appreciated direction of the comedian Gino Astorina, the group I Lautari, Mario Venuti, Rita Botto, Eleonora Bordonaro, the orchestra of the Angelo Musco Institute directed by Daniele Zappalà performed on stage, all artists who with Gino Astorina collected the Mayor Trantino’s invitation to perform for the evening event.
Mayor Trantino, after a brief greeting from the stage to the people who crowded and appreciated with applause both the artists’ performance and the decision to finally free Piazza Federico di Svevia from cars, announced that other musical and cultural entertainment events will take place shortly in the square of Castello Ursino to make the area increasingly lively and popular. “We consider the summer period – said the mayor – an experimental phase that will help us understand the most suitable solutions to meet the needs presented during meetings with residents and traders. I want to remind everyone – added Trantino – that until yesterday wild parking reigned supreme here, without any respect for pedestrians, whether they were citizens of Catania or tourists. The pedestrianization of Piazza Federico di Svevia must be seen as an added value for the city and as has happened in other similar choices, in the end there is always a positive return, aware as we are that this decision to regain liveable spaces is an achievement for everyone.”
