Despite the hunting trips and incentives offered by the Liguria Region, up to 80 euros for each animal killed, wild boars continue to multiply in Liguria and Genoa is the province most affected by swine fever: cases recorded from 1 January 2022 to 14 June 2025 updated data, there are 779, the highest number in all of Italy. This was reported by the Ligurian Coldiretti, which reports the impressive numbers of the spread of these animals which are now estimated to be 30 thousand in the Region.

” At this point, the Liguria Region has set itself annual hunting objectives – underlines the farmers’ association – numbers of killings that have never really been achieved, just think that during the 2022-2023 season the assigned quota required killing 30 thousand heads, of which only 13 thousand animals have been killed. We are awaiting official data for the current season. A target percentage of 45%.

To increase the quantity of animals killed, the Region has introduced a contribution for each carcass of wild boar killed within the indicated areas, so as to incentivize depopulation actions in the spring and summer 2024 period. In particular, €80 was recognized for the killings of adult females and €40 for males. Who can kick them out? These are killing teams and bioregulators, i.e. figures authorized to hunt and have completed specific training in biosecurity.

“Theoretically everything is correct,” they comment Gianluca Boeri and Bruno Rivarossa, President of Coldiretti Liguria and Confederal Delegate. “But we need to streamline the bureaucracy and the procedures that lead to the evacuation of the requests,” they add: “The bureaucratic blocks are a real threat to Ligurian agricultural work, which is why we ask the Liguria Region for an even greater effort than that put in place to date .”

Of all the possible bulletins, in fact, another one has been added, the worst, the human one. In 2023, the ASAPS Observatory recorded 193 significant accidents involving animals in Italy, an increase of 7.8% compared to the previous year. Of these, in 170 cases the accident was caused by a wild animal (88%). In serious accidents caused by animals on the loose, Liguria ranks seventh regionally in Italy, with a record of 14 accidents, meaning injured or deceased people. “Not to mention the damage to vehicles alone which is several thousand every year,” continue Boeri and Rivarossa. “With enormous reimbursement difficulties for motorists, due to slow bureaucracy and endless procedures.” They conclude: “Wild boars have been a plague on the agricultural sector and, in turn, on the Italian economy for years; since this wasn’t enough for us, we have now reached the point where a wild boar has even become a danger to people’s safety. The question arises spontaneously: how many more bulletins do we need?”
