They expire on July 14th the terms for submit the request for compensation for the damage caused from the spread of the blue crab on the coast of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

To be interested in the funds that the State made available following the confirmation of the exceptional condition that occurred last year, are the fishing and aquaculture companies operating in the areas that the Region has already delimited following the evidence collected: Grado and Marano lagoon in the municipalities of Grado, Marano, Lignano, Aquileia, Terzo di Aquileia, San Giorgio di Nogaro, Torviscosa, Carlino, Precenicco, Latisana, Palazzolo dello Stella, Muzzana del Turgnano; maritime strip in front of the municipalities of Grado, Marano, Lignano, Staranzano, Monfalcone, Duino-Aurisina, Trieste and Muggia.

The exceptional nature of the event

The request for compensatory interventions for the damage suffered in 2023 follows the decree of the Ministry of Agriculture which last May 23 declared «the existence of the exceptional character of the event», i.e. the exceptional diffusion of the blue crab species “Callinectes sapidus ” in Friuli Venezia Giulia. An act in response to the Region’s request with the resolution approved by the Council on 30 April. Now we have reached the last phase of the process, i.e. the opening of the deadlines for submitting the request for compensation for damages.
Companies must demonstrate that they have performed during 2023 at least one of the following activities: shellfish farming in lagoon areas and in the coastal strip within nautical miles from the coast; professional shellfish fishing in lagoon areas and in the area within miles of the coast; professional fishing with nets by post in the same areas.

Marano lagoon is the most affected area

To make clear the exceptional nature of the spread of the blue crab in the region, there are two numbers that accompany the regional resolution: in 2020, 30 kg were marketed on the Fvg fish market. of this type of crab, last year it reached 17 thousand kg.
Reading the data analytically, it is clear that to be decidedly “invaded” by the blue crab was especially the Marano Lagoon starting from July and until October-November, with the peak between August and September, when they are reached respectively 4 thousand and almost 5,600 kg of crabs. Overall, over 17 thousand kg were intercepted in the Marano Lagoon, while in the Grado Lagoon the figure reached 747 kg, with a peak of 426 kg. sold in September.
These numbers, however, are not exhaustive of the situation, since these refer only to the quotas marketed on the fish markets, almost always adult male specimens, while the quantities of product sold by professional fishing companies to catering companies or other entities escape the statistical data. private.
As regards the damage in the shellfish farming concessions in the Grado and Marano lagoons, the annex to the regional resolution of last April reports the conclusions of the investigation that the San Vito fishermen’s cooperative entrusted to a professional: «From the first monitoring sessions conducted in the two areas under concession to the cooperative, carried out in October 2023 and April 2024, a drastic decline in the numerical presence and biomass of the two species of bivalve molluscs, clams and lagoon hearts, appears evident, in particular by comparing the data with the previous one April 2019 monitoring”.
Furthermore, unlike previous years, probably due to the higher average water temperature, in 2024 “adult crabs were identified as early as the end of February and March”.
