In the 68th Giro del Montalbano with start and finish in Bacchereto in the province of Prato, the Englishman Benjamin Granger asserted himself by detachment, left alone at the head of the race 11 km from the finish line when the Lucchese Edoardo Cipollini who was traveling in the lead with him , took the wrong route in La Serra, practically giving the green light to the MG Kvis Colors For Peace rider who concluded his stupendous feat with arms raised. In fact, Granger broke away after just 27 km and therefore covered 130 km in the lead together with five other runners, with 4 of them giving up at the distance, while Cipollini made that mistake which was fatal for him.

The race remembered Luigi Bellini and Luciano Lenzi, who organized the first edition in 1954. And this year’s race has a touch of internationality with the solo success of the strong Englishman Benjamin Granger of MG Kvis Colors For Peace, a team also adopted by Seanese Corse, the organizing company of this race, together with the passionate local GS Bacchereto Committee. In second place was a splendid Garibbo who had won in Empoli 24 hours earlier and was looking for an encore, so Belleri appeared in excellent recovery after his brilliant start to the season. At the start of the Giro del Montalbano 144 runners and a race which recorded a notable selection at the distance, both due to the heat and the 4 passes from the “wall” of Madonna del Papa with the mountain grand prix in memory of Gastone Nencini, won by Cipollini was the unfortunate protagonist of this beautiful race.
