Pine forest at risk of fires, patrols begin – Pescara

PESCARA. The heat returns and the level of attention – and concern – for the D’Annunzio pine forest and the large green areas of the city rises. The memory of the tragic fire of 2021 is still alive in everyone’s eyes and the work to be done to avoid new accidents, especially those that could be caused by bad behavior of citizens, will be a lot in the summer that is starting. Next Sunday, June 23rd, the first campaign dedicated to raising awareness of the people of Pescara and of all the people who use the city parks will begin: “Reserve to love” is the name of the initiative which will see Civil Protection volunteers present with gazebos at the entrances of the Pineta D’Annunziana reserve to give information and distribute educational material on the behavior to follow within the park to avoid fire risks.
It will only be the first step, waiting for the Aib (Anti-forest fire) season to start from 15 July to 30 September. The second initiative is a campaign, requested by the Region, of patrolling and direct control by Civil Protection volunteers in the areas of San Silvestro beach, Pineta D’Annunziana and Colle del Telegrafo. In addition to the police, the situation in the green areas at risk of fire will be monitored by two volunteers per area, therefore three couples, who will be directly on site every day from 12 to 16, the hottest and most dangerous hours in where the parks are less frequented and therefore more “vulnerable”, to visually monitor the risk areas.
“The volunteers will only be an addition to the ordinary and punctual checks of the police,” he says Eugenio Seccia, outgoing councilor for Civil Protection, «three years after the Pineta fire, the memory is vivid and painful in our memory. The reserve is a heritage to be preserved, protected and pampered. We care a lot and we are doing a lot. After the negative experience, the municipal administration pays a lot of attention to assisting the activities of the fire brigade. What future for the Pineta? First of all, we hope that the vegetative growth will be as rapid as possible. The merger is underway for the formation of a large reserve, the green lung of the city and space for regeneration available to citizens.”
«Ready to put themselves at the service of parks and prevention this summer, there will be volunteers from the Municipality of Pescara, already a point of reference in other delicate situations, such as the period of the health emergency», closes Seccia. There are eight associations registered in the Municipality’s register, to which the Region’s association has recently been added, which has 50 employees.
In the next few days, the wood piled up for weeks in the area in front of the Via Pantini exit should be removed: almost 8 thousand quintals of pine trunks and branches removed from the areas of the reserve most affected by the fire in August 2021. The value of the material is over 22 thousand euros. Last May it was put up for auction and the time for submitting bids expired on June 6th, a few days before the municipal elections. Soon the administration will announce the name of the winners of the auction who will purchase the wood and will therefore be asked to remove it from the area where they are stored.
