CURTATONE (Mantua) – The first summer event of «Corte Distanze» will be held on Friday 21 June in the courtyard of Corte Maddalena, with an evening promoted by Carrozzeria Orfeo in collaboration with Cinema del Carbone and Mantua Farm School, with the support of Fondazione Cariplo , as part of the «For Culture 2022» call. It will start at 7.30 pm with the Pizzata organized by BioPizza in collaboration with Mantua Farm School. At 9 pm there will be a meeting with Clark Lawrence, American writer-gardener, author of «Small Plots» and «Mezzo giardiniere» and protagonist of the documentary “La Macchina Fissa – Clark’s garden” by Emilio Neri Tremolada (Italy, 2023, 73′), which will be screened at 9.30 pm, after a small ritual to celebrate the Summer Solstice with the participants, on the longest day of the year.
Macchina Fissa: this was the name of the water pumps that handled water for the reclamation and irrigation of agricultural land in the Po Valley. In Borgo Virgilio the plant, built in the mid-19th century, was powered by steam engines; abandoned for a century now, it now houses the cultural association Reading Retreats in Rural Italy and Clark Lawrence’s garden. At the beginning of filming, at the end of autumn, the plants were at the end of their vegetative cycle and showed an experience which, however, did not diminish their charm. Winter is Clark’s time to harvest seeds for next season, before a vigorous clean-up of the garden. His helpers in the undertaking are his beloved goats, who clean up the remains of the vegetation and, at the same time, fertilize the garden. In spring, the sowing of new plants begins, the American ones or, better, native Americans, the ones Clark loved most: pumpkins, corn and beans which, together with castor, amaranth, cosmos, evening primrose, morning glory and hundreds of other varieties, fill the vegetable garden in summer.
In the documentary we follow Clark in his work and observe his philosophy applied to the garden, a place in which to “swim among the plants”, a garden designed «…looking outside, at what is already around: landscape, plants, climate , the one that was built by man. First look outside and then think about what to do inside.”
