Space explorations confront us with the mysteries of existence that we have not yet been able to unravel. Sometimes, however, the epic moments that mark historical milestones for the advancement of our species are accompanied by episodes that are nothing short of hilarious. This is the case of various anecdotes regarding the exploration of Martian soil by NASA rovers.

Since the early 2000s, in fact, some vehicles intended for reconnaissance of the red planet have traced decidedly peculiar shapes on the ground during their maneuvers. The shape we are alluding to, in this case, is that of a phallus. The funniest aspect of the whole story? It wasn’t a single device that created the involuntary work of art. In fact, over the last twenty years the rovers that have drawn a shape incredibly similar to that of a penis on the surface of Mars have been Spirit and Opportunity, used in the mission Mars Exploration Rover duration from 2003 to 2018, and Curiosity, of the mission Mars Science Laboratory started in 2012.

NASA jokes about the artistic ambitions of its rovers

NASA itself has released an amusing statement relating to the particular artistic qualities of its vehicles. The mission director Mars Science Laboratoryin fact, he declared: “We’ve discovered that our rovers have a secret talent for abstract art, though perhaps they’re better off focusing on collecting scientific data“.

Despite the statement, many have hypothesized that the surgical precision of the drawings traced by NASA rovers could not be attributed to chance.
