SANTA MARINELLA – Yesterday morning the mayor Pietro Tidei opened the 2nd Congress of Pediatric Palliative Care in Lazio, which was held at the castle of Santa Severa. The conference was organized by the Lazio Region, the Bambino Gesù Hospital and the ASL Roma 4, and saw the participation of numerous voluntary associations, doctors, nurses, psychologists, healthcare workers and social workers. The aim of the conference was to take stock of the care pathways aimed at young cancer patients and their families. “The importance of the assistance network is fundamental to support the numerous families and children suffering from serious pathologies – said the mayor – in our city we need structures like the one that was created in Passoscuro which can welcome young patients and their loved ones . It is necessary to strengthen the well-organised assistance network, a team made up of doctors and psychologists available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, who can follow the path of the disease”. Addressing the president of the Bambin Gesù Hospital, the managers of the Region and the Local Health Authority, the Mayor then formulated a specific request. “We hope that in Santa Marinella too, a Hospice can be created within the network, which provides housing units in the area, where children and parents can find accommodation without difficulty and without great economic effort, because we know how burdensome it is for families face treatment and travel from their city and often from their region of origin. Offer hospitality and professional assistance in a non-hospital environment, where we can respond to the patient’s various needs and at the same time allow, as far as possible, an almost normal life”. The objective of the Lazio Region is therefore to ensure that the Palliative Care Network becomes a point of reference throughout the territory for the training of healthcare workers and professionals and, at the same time, a point of reference for the care path dedicated to very young patients and their families.
