Yomif Kejelcha he won the 10,000 meters at the Ethiopian Olympic Trials in Nerja, Spain, setting the best world performance of the year and the seventh all-time time with 26’31”01. Berihu Aregawi placed second, setting the eighth fastest time in history with 26’31”13. Olympic champion Selemon Barega improved his personal best with 26’34”93. Seventeen-year-old Binam Mehary set the under-20 world record with 26’37”93, Gemechu Dida improved his personal best with 26’42”65 ahead of Tadese Worku (26’46”80).
Foyten Tesfay won the Ethiopian 10,000 meters setting a personal best with 29’47”71. The other two qualifiers for the Olympics were Tsigie Gebrselama (29’49”33) and Ejgayehu Taye (29’50”52).
Kipyegon wins the 5000 meters at the Kenyan Olympic Trials
Olympic champion and world record holder Faith Kipyegon made her debut this season with a victory at the Kenyan Trials over 5000 meters in 14’46”26. The other two qualifiers for the Olympics were Beatrice Chebet (14’52”55) and Margaret Chelimo (14’59”29).
Lilian Odira won the women’s 800 meters with a personal best of 1’59”39 ahead of world champion Mary Moraa (1’59”35). Eighteen-year-old Sarah Moraa placed third with 1’59”39 but she missed the standard for the Olympics.
Faith Cherotich won the women’s 3000m steeplechase in 9’22”28 ahead of world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech (9’22”76) and Jackline Chepkoech (9’34”86).
Reynold Cheruiyot took first place and qualified for the Olympics in the men’s 1500 meters in 3’35”63. The other qualifiers for the Paris Olympic Games are Daniel Munguti (3’35”80) and the Doha 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot /3’35”30).
Alex Ngeno and Laban Chepkwony won the two semi-finals in 1’46”94 and 1’46”21 respectively. Vice world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi fell in the semi-final but was reinstated in the final. Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir has been readmitted to the final. Ferdinand Omanyala ran the 100 meters in 10.09.
