Cagliari «A politician of value, a defender of democracy, institutions and freedom, a martyr of anti-fascism, a journalist, a man of great culture. His ideas, his obstinacy in carrying forward the ideals he believed in are a model not only for those involved in politics or for those involved in institutions but for those who believe in a world of peace where democracy and equality which represent the fundamental values of civil societies must always be defended.” Thus, the president of the Regional Council of Sardinia, Piero Comandinirecalled the figure of Giacomo Matteotti during the commemoration ceremony of the socialist deputy 100 years after his assassination by a fascist squad on 10 June 2024. At the event “Matteotti and us. A lesson in freedom.” University professors, representatives of the social partners and students of the “Euclide” classical high school of Cagliari took part. Comandini addressed them in particular: «I say to the students present here in the room that democracy is the most important value. Fight for the principles you believe in. Don’t be afraid to discuss and express your thoughts. Democracy, thanks also to the sacrifice of many men of the past including Giacomo Matteotti, has given you this possibility. Don’t lose it.”
