POLITO Studio wins the Beneath competition

New milestone for POLITO Studio, a project of the Polytechnic of Turin and the Order to encourage internationalisation: part of the POLITO Studio Latin America team, the two-year training course accompanying the Latin American market, won the competition “Beneath – Challenge to design an underground social stop”.

The POLITO Studio America Latina professionals involved are:

  • Barbara Gasparini by Gaetano
  • Bruno Maiolo (with colleague Edmundo Chidiac) – 2mix
  • Mara Mercury
  • Marta Grignani – PlaC
  • Urszula Grodzicka

The professionals worked together with Lorenzo Savio, Monica Munoz and Frank Ramirez from the Polytechnic of Turin and a team of researchers from the Universidad de La Salle in Bogota. This is therefore another goal that arises from close cooperation between professionals registered with the Order and researchers from the Polytechnic of Turin: the participants established a virtuous relationship and had the opportunity to work closely with the Colombian professionals of theLa Salle University of Bogotawhich represented a fundamental contribution to the project.

How can the distribution model of building forms in the city be changed to guarantee the comfort of occupants and pedestrians?

This is the competition question Beneathwhose main objective is to design an underground public place, where multiple functions can be hosted on different levels of the same space. Plaza de San Victorino in Bogota (Colombia) is the place to design, located in the center of the city in the Vera Cruz neighborhood, full of commercial activities. In the center of the square is the sculpture “La Mariposa” by Edgar Negret, the starting point of the POLITO Studio team’s project.

In fact, the team’s proposal, entitled “Roots and Reverie. Cultivating Community”, starts from the idea that the sculpture is an example of successful integration in its space. Indeed, drawing inspiration from the surrounding urban landscape, the sculpture attracts attention thanks to its size and dynamic interaction with pedestrians.

However, the current perception of the sculpture is disturbed by an excess of visual stimuli, which diminish its function as a common space for aggregation and as an emblem of local identity. The target of the project is therefore to create a place conducive to rest, which offers respite from the incessant sensory overload of the surrounding environment.

Congratulations to all participants for the result achieved!
