Rome, concrete mixer sinks into a sinkhole: the accident during the filling operations of another hole

A concrete mixer engaged in filling the hole in via Sestio Menas, in the Quadraro district of Rome, sank into a new sinkhole. The road had already been closed to traffic since March 28th due to the collapse of the road surface and the cavity that opened in the ground. Local police officers have arrived on site and the firefighters assure that “the safety check of the buildings shows no critical issues”. The accident did not cause any injuries: in the images of the operators and local residents, the rear part of the vehicle can be seen “disappearing” under the road and rising into the front part, where the cab with the driver is located. The firefighters intervened with a mobile crane to recover the concrete mixer but the assistance of a second private crane was then necessary. “The concrete mixer collapsed on a sewer pipe,” local police officers reconstructed. «He was working to fill the large hole that opened on March 28th and this sinkhole is part of its underground cavity», the capital’s public works department says, referring to the sinkhole ten meters long and ten of depth which opened last March. From the findings of the probes and speleologists it emerged that the entire area is affected by underground cavities. According to ISPRA, the Ministry’s Institute for Environmental Protection, 20 percent of the territory of the municipality of Rome is at risk of sinkholes, particularly in the Appio, Tuscolano, Monteverde and Monte Mario areas.
