The Pegaso and Gev Capitanata civil protection teams operated until late yesterday evening to deal with the numerous requests for intervention received following the violent storm that hit the city and surrounding areas and caused considerable damage. Luckily no one was injured, but there was a lot of fear for the water bomb, wind and hail like tennis balls, which exploded around 6.30pm, and which literally paralyzed the town center of Vieste, even if damage was also caused in the nearby towns of Peschici and Vico del Gargano. The wind, in particular, caused several trees to fall. One of these, in Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie, hit four parked cars, causing extensive damage. Pegaso intervened here to clear the vehicles and the road. Trees also fell in the “Petto”, “Santo Stefano”, “Costella”, “Mandrione”, “Carabella” areas. Trees that invaded the roadways and blocked traffic for some time, until the Pegaso and GEV teams of Capitanata managed to remove trunks and branches. Flooding occurred in various parts of the city, in particular in the most subjected areas such as “Pantanello” and “C1Sud”. Pegaso water pumps involved in a hospitality facility in the “Posta Pastorella” area due to the flooding of some rooms. The very strong wind caused damage to many structures of the many restaurants and clubs in the city, with awnings, umbrellas, chairs and tables literally blown away. Also damage to crops, in particular olive groves, fruit and vegetables. The storm forced the organizers to cancel the events of the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, also due to the significant damage suffered by the service systems of the musical show “Hit Parade Tour” with Demo Morselli and Marcello Cirillo, scheduled for the evening , and some fireworks were completely destroyed. The procession of the Saint of Padua has also been cancelled, postponed to Sunday 16 June at 8.30pm.
As mentioned, damage also occurred in Peschici and Vico del Gargano.
