“A day of ordinary parliamentary madness”: 5Stars in disarray

After the House, the Senate. In the First Republic, a place of greater sobriety due to the age of the parliamentarians compared to the possible excesses of Montecitorio, Palazzo Madama also experienced a day of brawl yesterday, without even the sprints, the healthy competitive spirit and the frank competitiveness of cycling.

The main architects of a new day of “ordinary parliamentary madness” are always the 5 Stars, probably due to their choice to raise the level of political conflict and differentiating themselves, by force, from the Democratic Party which has significantly surpassed them in the European electoral competition.

After the brawl that involved the Lecce MP Leonardo Donno two days ago in an attempt to controversially hand over the tricolor to the Northern League minister Roberto Calderoli, the historic standard-bearer of differentiated autonomy, the senators of the party led by Giuseppe Conte took to the field, supported by their colleagues from the Pd and Avs. They occupied the desks traditionally assigned to governmentalmost displacing the ministers Elisabetta Casellati and Luca Ciriani who had settled there, putting a lot of effort on the clerks to try to remove them.

From the opposition benches, the waving of other tricolors by the Dems. The majority responded with Mameli’s anthem. The opposition relaunched by singing chants of “Bella ciao”, with the presidents taking turns struggling to try to restore calm in the Chamber.

Session suspended, to no avail. Upon resumption, the controversy once again rose to white heat. The Melonian senator Sandro Sisler accused the opposition of “themes that do not honor the Chamber”, the five-star senator Alessandra Maiorino defended the occupation initiative “which was not a clown”. Fdi senator Lucio Malan argued: “We all condemn violent gestures, wherever they occur, even more so in the parliamentary chambers, including acts of violence that may have been committed in the Chamber: the necessary measures will be taken in the bureau. But to seek justice for what happened in the House, the right way is not to violate the rules of the Senate.”

President Ignazio La Russa also had his say on the day of chaos in the Senate. After having tried to ask that, on the occasion of the concomitance of the G7 being held in our country, efforts should be made to try to avoid “presenting ourselves divided, working as a team like Italy”, he stated that “we risk appearing worse than we are 330 /350 days a year”, also intending to clarify that what happened in the Senate, especially the occupation of the government benches, was something different from the “riots” that occurred in Montecitorio.
