As soon as he found out he was failedhe rushed furiously at his mathematics teacher, attacking him with kicks, punches and a headbutt. It happened on the afternoon of Tuesday 11 June in the corridors of“Leonardo da Vinci” Economic Technical Institute of Milazzo, in the province of Messina: the protagonist of the attack was a minor student, who had been informed by his family of the final evaluations of the school year that had just ended. Learning of the failure, the young man ran to school and brutally attacked his mathematics teacher, then he fled. The police, who intervened on the spot, are investigating to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the event, also listening to the witnesses present.

The incident was reported by the principal of the institute, Stefania Scolaro: “Suddenly the boy arrived, went up to the first floor and he attacked the teacher who also hit his head when he fell. It is a very unpleasant episode and one to be condemned. AND we are very sorry. Also because we have always sought constructive discussion, both with families and with students. We must work together to prevent further incidents of this type and to ensure that schools remain a place of learning and growth, not violence.”

After the end-of-year exams, the school summoned the boy’s parents to inform them of his non-admission to the next class, as required by law. The parents calmly acknowledged their son’s failure and left the institute. Shortly afterwards, the young man returned to school and attacked his teacher. Principal Scolaro was forced to call the police and an ambulance from 118: the attacked professor was transported to the Giuseppe Fogliani city hospital for the necessary checks. The teacher’s condition is currently under observation.

The Sicilian regional school office reported this case to the Ministry of Education. The director Giuseppe Pierro has announced his intention to urgently convene a meeting with representatives of the parents’ associations. “There is no doubt that we are witnessing a deterioration in the relationship between school and family – explained the regional school office in a note -. He testifies to it the increase in aggression by parents against teachers“. The case of Milazzo is not, in fact, isolated, on the contrary, violence against teachers at school is a worryingly increasing phenomenon. Physical and verbal attacks, beatings, insults to teachers and principals have become sadly common. According to the data, last year they occurred 36 cases of violence against teachers in our country, and at least thirty other cases have been recorded from September to today, which means more than one case per week.
