From May 26th to June 2nd the members of International Council for Missions and Evangelization (CIME) and those of Executive Commission for Missions and Evangelization (CEME) they met in Istanbul, Turkey, at the convent of Santa Maria Draperis, to continue developing the Ratio Evangelizationis of the Order (REO).
Present for CEME were Br. Francisco Gómez Vargas and Br. Dennis Tayo, respectively General Secretary and Animator for Missions and Evangelization, Br. Johannes Freyer and Br. José Rodríguez.
For the CIME, 9 of the 13 Secretaries for the Missions and Evangelization of the Conferences of the Order were present: Br. Arcangel Borek (North-Slavic Conference), Br. Oscar Castro (Bolivarian), Br. Jovit Malinao (EAC), Br. Augustinus Nggame (SAAOC), Br. Edgar Alves Pereira (Brazil-Southern Cone), Br. Damir Pavic (South-Slavica), Br. José Rodríguez (ESC), Br. Natalio Saludes (CONFRES) and Br. Adolfo Calderón Velázquez (Our Lady of Guadalupe). Also present was Br. John Barker, member of the REO editorial committee and secretary of the meeting.
The mandate to develop the REO was given by the 2021 General Chapter. The discussion of the REO proposal began in the CIME-CEME meeting of March 2022. In May 2023 the General Definitory accepted a proposal from the Secretariat for Missions and Evangelism to convene a group of subject matter experts to develop a structure and framework for the REO and to begin drafting the document. That group met in September 2023 and developed a proposal which was then discussed and accepted (with suggestions) by the General Definitory. In December 2023, the Secretaries for Missions and Evangelism of the Conferences received a copy of the framework, and were asked to discuss the proposal and answer some questions to help draft the REO, and to submit any responses they might have. Meanwhile, the expert group continued its work, producing a draft Part One of the REO in March 2024.
The main work of the CIME-CEME meeting in May/June 2024 was to examine the responses of the Conferences regarding the proposed structure of the REO, discern common themes and concerns in them and discuss (preliminarily) their possible inclusion in the REO.
