farewell to the former employees’ building

Sesto San Giovanni (Milan), 12 June 2024 – The appointment in midnight, when it stopped (temporarily) raining. “But the work gets done anyway. In fact, if it rains, there isn’t even dust.” Tonight the workers have inthe demolition of the Piazza Primo Maggio station beganto Sesto San Giovanni . They will continue for two months until August 7th, every night, so as not to get in the way train circulation which, during the day, will never be interrupted.

Operations began on the left side of the buildingwhere they lived former employees. The ‘spider’ demolishes piece after piece, while two other workers spray water with the pump to limit the damage as much as possible. dust raisingthe. It will take at least a week to complete this first building. We work until 4.30: at 5 the first trains arrive at Sesto Fs. Day by day, however, they will be taken away and disposed of the rubble.

Once all the old buildings have been dismantled (the former employee quarters, the former baggage rooms and the waiting room), we will be able to start building the new bridge stationdesigned by the starchitect Renzo Piano and designed by the Milanese studio Ottavio Di Blasi&Partners. “The project for the new and innovative overpass structure will start from here. I am proud to see this project take shape which will unite the two parts of Sesto San Giovanni and transform our city into a more dynamic and attractive reality”, he commented the mayor Roberto Di Stefano, present at the start of operations together with several city councilors. The new bridge station will be characterized by a rectangular bridge deck, which will extend between two single-storey buildings in reinforced concrete on Piazza Primo Maggio and on the new square on the Falck side, with its large photovoltaic glass roof measuring 110 meters by 28 capable of powering the station, with a pedestrian connection suspended 14 meters high between commercial activities, shops and services overlooking the future large urban park. “Another piece of the old Sesto is leaving.

“This is a historic step – he underlined the councilor for urban planning Antonio Lamiranda, he was also present tonight -. In 200 years it is the third station to be built in our city, a sign of how this territory of ours is closely linked to the great transformations that characterize every century of our history”. He was also at the construction site Giorgio Oldrini, the former mayor who adopted the integrated intervention plan for the reconversion of the Falck areas, also bringing the City of Research and Health a little further, the construction of which is now underway. The one for the new station was the first lot to start on the former steelworks: the Italian company Cimolai Spa took over the land in July 2021, after winning the 14,673,803.63 euro tender. The demolitions will finish by the first week of August, but the overall completion of the construction site is scheduled for August 27, 2025 with the testing which, to date, is scheduled for November 25th of the same year. It is instead expected in summer 2025 the inauguration of the renovated Primo Maggio square, the bike station and the bus square.

In this phase, direct access to the trains will always be guaranteed: just follow the pedestrian paths indicated by the signs. Piazza Primo Maggio, the interchange car park and the bike station will soon be closed, while taxi and disabled parking spaces will be moved to the side of the station. Who has the pass for disabled people you can park for free on all blue lines. There station ticket office is closed: those who need to purchase tickets or passes can do so online, at the automatic machine in the station or at the newsstand on the subway. “RFI and the company are trying to improve the signage. On Saturday it was all rearranged. I carried out an inspection and now there is more clarity also because the entrance and exit is now only on one side – explained Lamiranda -. From today the management of track 1 will be even more complicated, because what remains of the roofing shelter will be demolished immediately and then we will proceed with the tower building and, subsequently, with the central and southern parts. It is already difficult to keep the station functioning in this context”.
