It was his colleagues, the coaches of the other women’s Serie A clubs, who voted him as the best coach of the 2022/2023 championship, with 18 votes (Piovani from Sassuolo came in second place with 4 preferences).
“Behind this recognition there is a lot of love, a lot of passion and a lot of ambition” underlined Alessandro Spugna, receiving the Golden Bench in Rimini during the ‘Coach Experience’, the event organized by the AIAC with the valorisation of the Technical Sector for update of the technicians. “This – continued Spugna – is an award to share with all the people who work with me on a daily basis, from the club managers to the staff and the players. Repeating last season was neither obvious nor easy and instead we all did very well to complete a season that was perhaps even more exciting in terms of results. And even the exit from the Champions League, even though we reached the group, still made us raise our level and the girls did well to stay in that context, in a very complicated group and fighting for qualification until the end”.
Finally, a joke about his training as a coach: “The coaches who leave the Coverciano school are defined as among the best in Europe, they obtain high-level training. I still have to complete this training and I would like to be able to do the UEFA Pro Master.”
It was the director of the Coaching School, Renzo Ulivieri, and the secretary of the Technical Sector, Paolo Piani, who presented him with the recognition. In the afternoon, Spugna himself then held a lesson on the pitch entitled ‘Training methods for a winning year’, illustrating the tactical approaches, physical preparation methodologies and specific exercises used this year.
