Basaglia Park and the future of its green heritage will be at the center of the meeting organized by Legambiente, Friday 14 June at 5.30 pm. The event, in the Dora Bassi room in Gorizia, aims to promote a precise knowledge of the park’s strengths and critical points, peculiar healthcare facility built more than a century ago as an Austro-Hungarian provincial mental hospital, and recently entered into the list of regional historical gardens and parks, having become an important element of the city’s cultural heritage. All this considering both the peculiarities of its ornamental structure and the value assumed in the history of world psychiatry by the figure of Franco Basaglia who was director here in the 1960s.

The vegetation has now reached a mature stage. Lost over time are striking examples of botanical and landscape beauty, and still displays evocative views with centuries-old trees, vast meadows and flowerings of rare spontaneous species. A heritage waiting to be cared for and enhanced. The main question of the meeting will therefore be what image will the works envisaged by the first lot of the historical-cultural regeneration project of the park initiated and managed by the regional cultural heritage body give back to citizens? Furthermore, what will be the prospects over time for the management of the new green structure, also relating to sustainability and respect for biodiversity?

The intent of the Legambiente du Gorizia club is to weave and open a constructive dialogue with the various owners and managers of the area, with the associations, sector experts, citizens and residents. The association claims to have always taken action, even locally, to promote knowledge and practice of the necessary environmental protection measures, useful for the prevention of human health and the planet, also dedicating itself to the study and dissemination of urban green heritage. Also in this case the precautionary principle – think before acting – will be the guiding theme, in the awareness that any damage caused to the soil and to the balance of habitats is a subtraction of well-being, health and beauty for everyone.

The phytosanitary consultant Giancarlo Stasi will speak to illustrate the current state of the park’s vegetation followed by the naturalist Stefano Fabian, from the Region’s Biodiversity Service, who will talk about the role of biodiversity in the urban context. Mina Fiore, coordinating architect of the Land Italia srl working group, will participate in representing Erpac on the central theme of the meeting: the definitive-executive project of the first lot. The interventions of the managing bodies will be closed by GO!2025 councilor Patrizia artigianato, who will present the point of view of the Municipality of Gorizia in the context of the European Capital of Culture.

Finally, to highlight the educational-scientific opportunities offered by the green area of Basaglia, Sonia Kucler will intervene and present the results of the environmental education activities carried out in the park for the training of young people from the “Quadri di Natura” project which she curated and, in closing, the teachers and students of Isis Brignoli who will dialogue within their “Science expedition”: “School generation on the move with Globe” project, an original environmental analysis experience carried out in the park. The meeting will be introduced by Luca Cadez, vice president of the club and will be moderated by Franco Perazza, former director of the Mental Health Center of Gorizia.

At the end there will be space for interventions by the public. Some exhibition stands will be set up with scientific dissemination material and some productions by Isis Brignoli students.
