Cagliari, 8 June 2024 – The fourth day of AI competitions Absolute Italian Fencing Championships Cagliari 2024 crowns the men of Gold Flames and women of the Air Force teams sword champions of Serie A1. Two confirmations for two teams who were called to defend the title won a year ago in La Spezia and who did not miss the appointment in the event organized between the Monte Mixi facilities and the PalaPirastu.
There men’s race ends with the victory of the Fiamme Oro which fielded Gianpaolo Buzzacchino, Valerio Cuomo, Davide Di Veroli and Marco Fichera over the Army, in the quartet with Gabriele Cimini, Fabrizio Cuomo, Giacomo Paolini and Francesco Pio Iandolo. The title match ends with Di Veroli securing a 32-28 lead over Paolini and allowing the State Police team to achieve their fifth consecutive championship in the specialty. Bronze for the Air Force (Enrico Piatti, Paolo Pizzo, Matteo Tagliariol and Andrea Vallosio), who beat Scherma Bresso (Fabio Barbara, Federico Bollati, Mattia Loiacono and Yordano de La Caridad Suárez Santiuste) 44-43 in the extra minute, first of civil societies and one step away from the podium.
There women’s race saw the confirmation of the Air Force, which celebrates the championship with Alessandra Bozza, Gaia Caforio, Marta Ferrari and Federica Isola, winning the final with a score of 45-38 over the Army of Nicol Foietta, Sara Maria Kowalxzyk, Roberta Marzani and Francesca Boscarelli. The final for the bronze instead sees the Fiamme Oro, without Alberta Santuccio (and with Giulia Rizzi on the bench for the entire match, in both cases a precaution in view of the European Championships), prevail 45-27 with the trio composed of Alice Clerici , Lucrezia Paulis and Gaia Traditi, most obviously the individual champion Giulia Rizzi, on the Methodos Sant’Agata Li Battiati of Rossella Fiamingo (on loan from the Carabinieri), Caterina Auteri, Sara Saladdino and Sofia Torrisi.
Between the two finals the ritual passing of the flag of the Italian Fencing Federation was also celebrated: from Cagliari to Barifrom Ariana Melis, President of the Cagliari 2024 COL, to Andrea Vernaleone, her counterpart regarding Bari 2025. The FIS President Paolo Azzi wanted to express his thanks to the Organizing Committee of the Athos Academy of Arms for the Italian Absolute Championships organized for the first time in Sardinia “thanks to a bet that began a few years ago and reached its peak today” and good luck to Bari which will return to host the Italian Absolute Championships 27 years after the last time.
