Eastern Sicily risks falling back into waste emergency

The emergency risk returns to waste collection for the 200 municipalities of eastern Sicily, involved in the closure of the Lentini TMB in the Syracuse area. After a temporary reopening, the mechanical biological treatment plant is in fact forced to close its gates again because there is no more space to accommodate material. The stop on deliveries starts from Tuesday 2 July.

The judicial administrators of the facility explain that after having restarted the TMB on June 26, in application of a provision of the President of the Sicilian Region, who is also the commissioner for the waste emergency on the island, they received the availability for the delivery from only two of the four landfill management companies cited in the Ordinance: “In consideration of this and the consequent saturation of the spaces available for the storage of filmed bales of Eer 191212 waste – write the judicial administrators of Sicula Trasporti – the undersigned company will not be able to materially continue the treatment activity, and therefore reception, beyond July 2, 2024, reserving the right to limit the deliveries from July 1 if the safety conditions of the delivery area require it”.

“We urgently request – the document concludes – an inspection visit in order to verify what has been stated by the territorial control bodies: Arpa Sicilia, Arpa Uos Attività produttive Catania, provincial command of the Fire Brigade and Asp of Catania”.
