Polls open from Saturday at 3.00pm to 11.00pm and then on Sunday 9th from 7.00am to 11.00pmthe time when the counting and the first ones will begin exit poll. Any runoffs, scheduled only for municipalities with more than 15 thousand inhabitants, will be held on 23 and 24 June. Only 228 administrations among those voting have more than 15 thousand inhabitants and, due to the new electoral law, a run-off is not foreseen even for the Piedmont region.

The European elections

On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June Italy will also vote in the European elections: more than 47 million Italian citizens can go to the polls, including 2.7 million new voters according to Eurostat, that is, boys and girls who were still minors 5 years ago. They belong to Italy 76 seats of the 720 expected for the new Eurochamber. The Parliament that will emerge from the elections, that of the tenth legislature (2024-2029), will have 15 more MEPs compared to the last mandate. As a general rule, the number of MEPs is decided before each election on the basis of the most recent demographic data: no less than 6 and no more than 96 seats for each EU country, with a total that cannot exceed 750 MEPs plus to the President (which among other things coincides with the composition of the European Parliament before Brexit). In Italy there are five European electoral constituencies: that is, the regions are aggregated into 5 areas to which a number of seats is assigned based on the resident population: 20 for north-western Italy (Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy), 15 for north-eastern Italy (Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna), 15 for central Italy (Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Lazio), 18 for southern Italy (Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata , Calabria), 8 for insular Italy (Sicily, Sardinia). Each political party or group can present in its list a maximum number of candidates equal to that assigned to the electoral constituency and voters can choose among the candidates present in the lists of their constituency of residence.

Which municipalities are voting?

Of the 7,896 Italian municipalities they are 3,715 administrations that renew mayors and city councilors. In the list there are also 29 provincial capitals, of which 6 are regional capitals. In the first list we find: Ascoli Piceno, Avellino, Bari, Bergamo, Biella, Cagliari, Caltanissetta, Campobasso, Cremona, Ferrara, Florence, Forlì, Lecce, Livorno, Modena, Pavia, Perugia, Pesaro, Pescara, Potenza, Prato, Reggio Emilia , Rovigo, Sassari, Verbania, Vercelli and Vibo Valentia. The elections in Piedmont

In Piedmont, as well as for the municipal elections, scheduled in 799 municipalities, there will be voting to elect the new regional president. There are five aspiring governors and in all, thirteen lists and five related lists are presented, for a total of over 500 candidates; but only one in ten will be able to take a seat in the Regional Council. Since the regional electoral law has been modified, which no longer provides for a run-off round, the candidate who receives the highest number of votes will be elected.
