Serena Ursillo and Enrica Macci died

Fatal accident A1 – AE 44-year-old truck driver of Tunisian origins but resident in Caltagirone, in the Catania area, was sentenced to three years and six months in prison for aggravated vehicular homicide. The accident, which occurred on 17 June 2022 along the A1 motorway, caused the death of Serena Ursillo, aged just 37, and her friend Enrica Macci, aged 49, as well as seriously injuring three other people .

AE negotiated the sentence today, Thursday 6 June 2024, in the Court of Siena, before Judge Sonia Caravelli. The penalty, as reported Nicola de Rossi – Valore SpA in a press release (which we attach ed.) will be served under house arrest and, as an additional sanction, his driving license has been revoked.

The accident was caused by a number of factors: distraction, speeding and probably even tiredness, due to failure to comply with the prescribed driving and rest times. Despite the traffic jam warning, AE failed to stop his vehicle in time, violently colliding with the vehicles in front of him.

The tragic accident was reconstructed in detail by prof. eng. Mario Vangi, the expert appointed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Siena, Dr. Niccolò Ludovici, to draw up a kinematic technical consultancy to ascertain the dynamics, causes and all responsibilities.

AE, driving a Iveco General Trailer articulated lorryhit one first Volkswagen T-Roc. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn, crashing into two other stationary vehicles. Unfortunately, after this first impact, the articulated lorry continued its forward motion, running over other vehicles, including the Fiat Panda conducted by Enrica Macci and on which it was transported Serena Ursillo.

The two women, both involved in the world of sport and volleyball, were traveling to Chianciano to follow a qualification course for volleyball coaches. They would never have gotten there.

Serena Ursillo’s family members, assisted by Studio3A, have already been fully compensated by the truck’s insurance company. However, they also expected a response from criminal justice, despite knowing that no punishment would ever be commensurate with the unbridgeable loss they suffered. The answer arrived, with a non-negligible sentence considered the “practice” for the crime of vehicular homicide.
