The taxi drivers’ unions have decided to suspend it 48-hour national strike, originally scheduled to start tomorrow. The reversal comes after the meeting that took place this morning at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport where the taxi drivers’ representatives were received by the deputy minister Edoardo Rixi. Over 30 trade unions were present and listened to Rixi’s commitment “for a comparison based on sharing so that useful solutions can be found to improve the service, in everyone’s interest, with the hope that the strike scheduled for 5 and 6 June will be revoked”. Which then happened, avoiding the second mobilization in less than a month. The parties will meet again on June 17th, date on which a new table was convened.

From the meeting “the desire to quickly approve the implementing decrees of law 12/19 in order to be able to really combat the widespread phenomena of unfair competition and illegal practices present in the sector which jeopardize the maintenance of the public service and its guarantees to protect users”, declared the unions. Rixi thanked the associations for stopping the strike, underlining the importance of the meeting as a “sense of responsibility towards all operators working in the area”.

Taxi drivers protest against the illegitimate use of rental authorizations and “to safeguard their autonomy and independence from slavery of algorithms and multinationals”. Furthermore, among the claims, the usual one opposition to the increase in licenses.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Rome reiterates his intention to assign new licenses. “There are too few taxi licences. Yesterday I had a meeting after Art’s opinion, and we are now at the decisive point: the tender for licenses will start very soon. We will start with 1000 new taxi licenses and many new NCC licenses, and above all there will be a much larger pool of people eligible for the licence. We will have constant monitoring, and if necessary we will be able to arrive at higher numbers,” he said Roberto Gualtieri.
