This is the e ff ect that the new coach Antonio Conte is generating and his name has now become the trending topic in the social “word of mouth” which has a wide diffusion on the banks of Partenope. “But is he coming?”, “Is he coming?” until the sensational “It’s arrived”, which yesterday generated a buzz that has now disappeared in Naples since the conquest of the scudetto. His landing in Capodichino was just fake news, complete with a photo alongside a financier, which went viral within a few hours. It wasn’t true, because everything happened in Rome: the three-year contract was signed, drawn up together with the president Aurelio De Laurentiis, the CEO Andrea Chiavelli and the sporting director Giovanni Manna, which weaved the fabric in the days preceding the conclusion of an agreement which seemed impossible until a few months ago. Instead, this time too Don Aurelio won his challenge, managing to sign the best coach around, without a bench and eager to get back on track as soon as possible.
A question of luck, of course, as well as the timing thanks to which the owner of Napoli managed to convince four top, yet absent, coaches in various footballing eras of his club. The first was Rafa Benitez in the summer of 2013: he was waiting for someone to contact him, after being dumped by Chelsea with whom he had just won the Europa League. Then it was the turn of Carlo Ancelotti, also an illustrious unemployed man, and De Laurentiis was able to convince him that, with that jewel team left by Maurizio Sarri after a magical three-year period, they could climb the final step to winning the scudetto. It didn’t go that way and their paths separated with a sensational dismissal. Finally, Luciano Spalletti, without the bench for two years (but with the salary of Inter who had released him) and attracted by the idea that he could do wonderful things with that team. So much so that he won the title of Italian champion by a landslide, 33 years after Napoli last played. Now there is Antonio Conte, the only remedy to cancel a disastrous season, with three coaches and a tenth place which represents a negative record for the Serie A championship: never in modern football has the team that he wore the tricolor on his shirts and thus ended the following championship.
This is the great ability of Aurelio De Laurentiis, endowed with a persuasive ability like few in the world. This time too, Conte did it (the presentation on Thursday 13 June, at the Royal Palace), not just anyone, a coach who allowed Juve to open the cycle of 9 consecutive championships (he won the first three), for then interrupt the same cycle, allowing Inter to pin the tricolor on their shirts again in 2021. Finally, the Premier League title with Chelsea which, ironically, they had taken after a season that ended in tenth place. Just like Napoli who are looking for immediate redemption from him, perhaps trying to convince Di Lorenzo to stay and Kvaratskhelia not to listen to the PSG sirens. It won’t be easy, but everyone knows that Conte is capable of winning even with teams without great champions. He is like that, a divisive character, who has caused and will cause discussion. And his return is the last great coup of president De Laurentiis, especially now that the audience is devoid of great actors: with the departures of Allegri, Mourinho, Sarri and Pioli, only Conte will be able to animate Serie A beyond the pitch of game.
