All six people injured in last Sunday’s tragic accident have been discharged A12 motorway toll booth Of Rosignano Marittimo (Livorno) where they lost their lives Robert Friendrich Fendt61 years old, his wife Maria Cornelia Schubert68 years old, both German citizens, and the 21 year old Marco Acciai. They all died instantly in the impact between the German couple’s Honda and a Fiat 500 L stopped at the toll booth.

The Livorno Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to ascertain the dynamics of the event and the causes of the accident. Surveillance camera images show the Honda proceeds at high speed and violently impacts the Fiat 500 stops at the toll booth, causing the immediate deaths of Fendt, Schubert and Acciai. The footage shows no signs of braking, suggesting the driver may not have had time to react. The force of the impact then triggered a Domino effect also involving the car with the foreign family and causing injuries to its occupants.

The investigators are examining various hypotheses: an illness on the part of the German driver, a distraction, a fall of sleep, a mechanical failure or a risky overtaking. The analysis of Honda’s “black box”. and autopsy tests on the deceased could provide useful elements for reconstructing the events. The most accredited hypothesis seems to be that of a sudden illness but only the results ofautopsy examination, ordered by the Prosecutor’s Office, they will be able to reveal whether Robert Friendrich Fendt actually had an illness that caused him to lose control of the vehicle. The judiciary also ordered toxicological tests to check whether Fendt was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. At the moment there are no emergency calls to 112 or 118 from passengers on board the Honda. The accident caused considerable damage to the toll booth, which was partially destroyed. The Prosecutor’s Office has ordered the seizure of all vehicles involved for further investigations.
