On the association’s YouTube channel, interviews with Maristella Pitzalis and Francesca Paolucci, historical feminists from Perugia, who “return” the document of the TRANSFEM PLATFORM of Perugia in the part concerning the Consultants (HEALTH AND WELL-BEING working table).
Born from feminist struggles on the premise of responding to the needs and desires of a woman subject placed at the center of public attention, the law on Consultori (1975/405), establishes the opening of 1 every 20,000 inhabitants. With regard to Umbria, it should be remembered that many areas have never had a Consultorio and that Perugia has ONLY ONE of the EIGHT that the numerical relationship with the population would impose; a SECOND, recently reopened after a long closure, works only in the medical part. Opened in a leopard-like fashion according to local and regional policies, the Consultori have always suffered, across much of the national territory, from voluntary failures dictated by a chronic hostility of conservative and religious forces, thus penalizing the most fragile subjects and women in the most delicate moments of their life and biological potential. The absence or malfunction caused by poor political will, conscientious objection and insufficient funding causes harmful and painful delays especially with respect to voluntary termination of pregnancy (with boycott of the pharmacological one with RU486); penalizes those who apply the law (career suspension, extended hours, lack of spare parts), and often downgrades them to a “medical service”, without full usability.
PITZALIS and PAOLUCCI accompany the analysis of yesterday, and its socio-political-economic motivations, with the vision of the future, from a gender, feminist and trans-feminist perspective, expressed by the TRANSFEM PLATFORM, not by chance entitled “Perugia: what kind of city: Spaces. Bodies. Rights” and proposed in times before the electoral campaign won, in the Umbrian capital, by VITTORIA FERDINANDI, the first female Mayor (two degrees, entrepreneur, Knight of the Republic), to whom we send our best wishes and who immediately emphasized the sense of an institutional role to be respected in its chorality. PITZALIS and PAOLUCCI underline the importance of restoring the renamed CONSULTORIA, to promote sexual, reproductive and emotional health, for all ages; having trained staff, competent multidisciplinary teams with figures of social worker, midwife, gynecologist, cultural mediator and psychologist; to reserve specific attention to disability, to the treatment of diseases (e.g. vulvodynia) not yet recognized; the participation of the transfeminist subject in forms of management and self-management.
CONSULTING OFFICES as places of plural crossing and contact, of response in short and certain times, of care and reception, of exchange and information, capable of “intercepting and giving answers and dialogue starting from schools, with a view to prevention, information and education on sexuality and health, to also improve the well-being of the community in compliance with the singularities but also of the secular and plural system of Italian society and the Constitution.” Institutions to be strengthened also to take on pressing issues (e.g. FGM; the right to health and access to services for people of non-Italian citizenship; etc.)
