the tremor was captured by closed-circuit cameras

Strong earthquake tremors were recorded on Monday in the central-northern region of Ishikawa in Japan, already heavily affected by the earthquake of January 1st.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the northern tip of the Noto peninsula. A few minutes later a 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred. This was reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The agency said there was no danger of tsunamis as a result of the earthquakes. No damage or injuries were reported.

Shinkansen super-express trains and other train services were temporarily suspended for safety checks, but most have resumed, according to the West Japan Railway Company.

The Nuclear Regulatory Authority said no anomalies had been found at the two nearby nuclear power plants.

One of them, the Shika plant on the Noto peninsula, suffered minor damage, although officials said it did not affect the cooling functions of the two reactors.

Hokuriku Electric Power Company said there were no power outages.

Monday’s tremors rekindled the fears of residents who are still recovering from the damage of the New Year’s earthquake.

The city of Wajima was one of the hardest hit in January, when a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto peninsula and killed 241 people.
