The assembly in the Municipality of Massarosa is called for Tuesday 4 June at 9 pm for the presentation of Montigiano’s Firewise project. It is a self-protection project against fires, through the establishment of a Firewise Community: that of Massarosa is the fifth created in Tuscany. A process that began a few months ago following the fire that hit Massarosa in 2022 and which involves various subjects: Tuscany Region, UC of Versilia, UC Mediavalle of Serchio, Municipality of Massarosa, village committees and private citizens who own the land subject to intervention.
Forest fire prevention communities directly involve citizens in the management of prevention activities, so that everyone becomes fully aware of the level of risk present in their territory with respect to the start and spread of a forest fire. The objective is to firstly make citizens who reside in the so-called interface areas – those located between the urban settlement and the forest – responsible for the need to adapt the spaces around their real estate to protect themselves and increase personal and safety safety. neighborhood. As? Maintaining areas with a lower density of vegetation around your structures/buildings with the aim of reducing the effects of a possible passage of fire. The project also teaches how to behave correctly in the event of fire, we work to prevent the passage of fire, but at the same time to be ready, in any case, to face it by limiting the consequences to a minimum. Firewise therefore have an active protection role from fires and are spreading in Tuscany as a response strongly supported by the regional forest firefighting organisation.
Private citizens and AIB voluntary associations participate in Firewise
Municipality, Competent Body in the area regarding the forest fire prevention function, each is responsible for various actions:
- private citizens undertake to create and maintain the defensive space around their assets over time;
- the AIB volunteer associations participate with their members and their means in the creation and maintenance of firewise;
- the Municipality promotes and approves the establishment and maintenance of the Community;
- the competent body draws up the necessary technical design for the creation and maintenance of the firewise and undertakes to create and maintain the protection zone surrounding the defensive space;
- The Tuscany Region undertakes to coordinate the project and plan the works of Firewise.
Specifically, there will be over 35,000 euros allocated by the Tuscany Region for an important project studied and adapted based on the needs of the town of Montigiano, the hamlet most affected by the fire. A participatory process that officially starts on June 4th, but which has already seen residents very active in these first phases.
