The Natisone river as a background. A hug that could be the last. In Premariacco, in Friuli, the search continues for Patry, Bia and Cristi, the three missing young people swept away by the current. At the moment only a handbag belonging to one of the girls was found, containing the mobile phone from which the SOS signal to the emergency number 112 was sent.
The three missing are Patrizia Cormos, 20 years old, Bianca Doros, 23, and her boyfriend, 25 year old Cristian Casian Molnar. Patrizia lives with her family in Basaldella di Campoformido, a few steps from Udine, a second year student at the Tiepolo Academy of Fine Arts, Interior design course. Doros had arrived in Udine from Romania a few days ago to find her parents who live there. Crstian is originally from Romania and lives in Austria. Their relatives stayed late on June 1st.
The new testimony
A new testimony appears: «The boys were in a panic but the situation was not yet compromised: only a couple of meters of water separated them from safety, with a still limited height. Unfortunately they were undecided about what to do: they were looking for the lowest point where they could cross, but they were panicked and I immediately called the police.” The driver of the municipal school bus of Premariacco (Udine) said this to TeleFriuli when he said he had noticed the boys crossing the Roman bridge.
“They slipped away from us”
After the carabinieri’s alarm, the Udine firefighters arrive on site. As reported by the Corriere, they launch small boats from the bridge. All useless. Thus, a fireman dives and tries to go beyond the islet where Patrizia and her friends are imprisoned. The current is too strong and he has to give up. A colleague, from the bridge, invites the three to hug each other. «Make masses, masses». Then the islet disappears with the three. The firefighters’ dismay remains: “They slipped away.”
The research
Almost 36 hours after their disappearance, the rescuers have now lost all hope of finding the young people still alive, but obviously they will continue their searches until they have returned their bodies to their families. The relatives arrived on site this morning and since then have been silently watching the continuous checks by the firefighters and Civil Protection technicians. The rest are tears of desperation from the relatives, assisted by a psychologist.
The party postponed at the behest of Natisone
There were many things to celebrate: the test just passed by Patrizia, enrolled in the second year of the Academy of Fine Arts; an exam finished just before 12, just in time to get in the car with friends and reach «Premariacco beach», also taking advantage of a sudden – and unexpected – clearing of the sky. There was Bianca’s family reunion to celebrate, having only been in Italy for three days to visit her parents, whom she hadn’t seen for a long time; not to mention her reunion with her boyfriend Cristian, who after a stopover in Austria with her brother had rushed to Friuli to be with her. A moment of joy to share and immortalize with your mobile phone. But no reckless selfies: they had chosen the spring colors of Natisone as a backdrop. Without dealing with her terrible dark side.
The reconstruction
In a few minutes the torrent, swollen upstream by exceptional rainfall, began to rise. Nothing that seemed that tragic. The boys had followed a path that leads to the center of the riverbed. From that position they saw their way back to shore blocked by a first stretch of water. In that moment there was their last chance of salvation. «They were dry – recalls the driver of the municipal school bus that passed on the bridge above – but already in a panic. It was clear that they didn’t know what to do. Only a stretch of a couple of meters of water separated them from the bank, the bottom at most up to their torso height. They didn’t feel like wading, they retreated to the center of the river bed.” There they waited for help, in the sadly famous embrace.
