Italian box office receipts: Furiosa wins the weekend, May ends with a sharp decline | Cinema

It was a decidedly negative weekend at the Italian box office: only 2.8 million euros collected in four days, with a drop of 60% compared to the over 7 million euros collected a year ago, when The Little Mermaid debuted with over 3.6 million euros . The month of May is closing with strongly negative data not only compared to a year ago, but obviously also compared to the pre-pandemic period. Although there are those who are already ready to point the finger at streaming and talk about a cinema crisis, at the moment in reality the industry is facing its darkest point after the strikes that paralyzed Hollywood a year ago, and which resulted in a lack of product. The films are released, but there are fewer of them (they have been diluted throughout 2024) and they have less propulsion also in terms of overseas marketing.

So let’s move on to the rankings. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga it raised just under 700 thousand euros in four days, with an average of 1500 euros per room. Already on Thursday it emerged that the trend would be in line with that of Mad Max: Fury Road, which debuted practically at breakeven nine years ago with its prequel (125 thousand against 120 thousand euros). Over the course of the weekend, however, the comparison became unfavorable towards Furious: Fury Road in fact it grossed a million in four days. We will therefore see if Furiosa will be able to close its run like its predecessor, that is, with 3 million in total.

Second position for IF – Imaginary friends, which collects another 430 thousand euros, holding up well compared to a week ago and rising to 1.3 million euros. In third place Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes collects another 306 thousand euros, for a total of 2.5 million euros (it will close above 3 million in total).

Fourth position for a new Italian release: Gospel according to Mary However, it only grosses 151 thousand euros, with a very low average per theater. In fifth place Abigail it collects 147 thousand euros and rises to 528 thousand euros in total.

The ranking continues with films in progress, except for ninth place which sees the debut of My Marcelloa film seen at the Cannes Film Festival and shown in around 200 cinemas in the original language.

Finally, worth noting Challengers which, in seventh place, reached 4.1 million euros.
