“Some ignorant people, even those running for the European Parliament, make fun of the European flag. The European flag is not twelve stars on a blue background. That flag represents our identity and our Christian roots.” Antonio Tajani, Foreign Minister, said this during a speech organized by Forza Italia in Verbania.
“The twelve stars are not the States, they are the twelve stars that surround the head of the Virgin, they represent the twelve tribes of Israel, and the flag is blue because the Virgin’s mantle is blue. That flag clearly indicates what our roots are. That’s why it should be respected. I think we should have respect for this and try to understand who we are, because the more we know who we are, the stronger we are.”
When asked if in his words there was a direct reference to Roberto Vannacci or Claudio Borghi, candidates for the European elections with the League who in recent weeks and days spoke on the topic of the European flag, Tajani responded by explaining that the phrase was “referring to everyone, so that everyone knows what the European flag is”.
