Gambero Rosso experts carried out a blind taste test to choose the best canned tuna in the supermarket: here are the results of the survey

The canned tuna it represents, for many people, a quick second course to prepare and a weekly portion of fish that does not need cooking and can easily be consumed even outside the home.

However, as we have already explained in several articles, the undoubted practicality of canned tuna there are various risks to our health and the environment which should push us to limit the consumption of this food.

Among the problems for the environment, we mention the intensive tuna farming and fishing methods (such as trawling) that are damaging the marine ecosystem.

As for health risks, remember that tuna accumulates mercurya neurotoxic metal harmful to the nervous system, especially for children and pregnant women.

Also pay attention to nutritional declaration of the product (energy value, quantity of fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugars, proteins and salt): excessive quantities of salt or fat negatively affect our health.

In short, canned tuna should be avoided – also because the levels of pollutants and microplastics present in the product are not shown on the label. However, let’s remember that it is the dose that makes the poison.

Moderate and occasional consumption of canned tuna, keeping in mind its origin and the type of fishing from which the product originates, will allow us to limit the damage associated with this product to a minimum – for the body and for the environment.

To support consumers in their choice, the experts at Red shrimp carried out a “blind” taste test involving some of the canned tuna sold at the supermarket.

The test

The experts have selected a sample of ten canned tuna produced by well-known brands and carried out a blind taste test, which analyzed the external appearance of the product, the firmness of the meat, the presence of excess oil, the flavor and sensations on the palate.

We underline that this evaluation was made only with the taste test, e.g no laboratory analyzes or insights into the label were carried out.

The best tuna in the supermarket, second Red shrimpAnd Rio Mare – Tuna in olive oilappreciated for the compact slice that does not crumble, and for the delicate hints of fish that undoubtedly prevail over the oily note.

On the palate, it stands out for the pleasantness of its consistency, but above all for a pleasant hint of flavor, not excessive, which extends into the finish and makes the hints of fish persistent.

In second place in the ranking we find Corsaro – Yellowfin tuna in olive oilawarded for the delicacy of its organoleptic profile, for its excellent consistency and for the low salt content which helps to better appreciate the characteristics of a good raw material.

Completes the podium, in third place, Sardarelli – Yellow fin tuna in olive oilwhich comes with a significant percentage of oil which however does not affect the organoleptic profile which is quite balanced and delicate in its aromas.
