three women died, the killer attempted suicide before arrest

A 62-year-old man, described as “mentally unstable” allegedly set fire to the room of a guesthouse where two lesbian couples were staying, causing the death of three of them and leaving the only survivor in critical condition. The attack that took place last Sunday in Buenos Aires was defined by the Argentina LGBT Federation: «One of the most aberrant hate crimes of recent years. It was a lesbicide, and the state is complicit.” The man was arrested but first attempted suicide.

The slaughter

Three women were burned alive: Pamela Cobbas, 52, died a few hours after the attack; Mercedes Roxana Figueroa, of the same age, resisted for two days in atrocious suffering, while Andrea Amarante, 42 years old, resisted for a week before giving up exhausted. The only survivor is Sofia Castro Riglos, 49 years old, currently still in hospital but out of danger. And it is thanks to her testimony that the killer was caught.

Justo Fernando Barrientos, this is the name of the man who deliberately set fire to the women, who lived in the next room, attempted suicide in vain. Javier Milei’s government also made a point of reiterating that every act of violence is equally reprehensible. But the spokesman Manuel Adorni, as reported by the La Repubblica website, said he was against “talking about a single episode when the violence is something broader. There are men and women who suffer it and this cannot continue to happen.” But when an MP asked him to talk about lesbicide, the spokesperson showed a screen shot of the Royal Academy of Language page where in his opinion “the word lesbicide is not registered”.

Words of disdain from Amnesty International which recalls that crimes committed against gays, lesbians, bisexuals, trans and intersexuals “are crimes classified as hate crimes”.
