Two golds and a silver in front of the President of the Republic Mattarella are the Italian spoils on the penultimate day of the European Athletics Championships in Rome.
Gianmarco Tamberi adds the show, pulling springs out of a shoe after a heart-pounding victory: two errors before exceeding 2.29 in the third test,
2.31 at the first with ease and, with the gold in his pocket and two flops at 2.33, still 2.34 of momentum. But it’s not enough: for the benefit of a jubilant stadium he jumps alone, on the first attempt, even 2.37 and says goodbye to Paris.
The other gold is from Nadia Battocletti: an encore in the 10,000m (with the Italian record of 30’51″32) after the victory in the 5,000m.
Silver for Alessandro Sibilio in the 400 hurdles (also above the national record in 47″50). Tomorrow other emotions: Larissa Iapichino in the long run, the two 4×400 relays and the 4×100 men (without Jacobs and Tortu) are in the final.
Before sitting in the stands, the President of the Republic also met seven Italian players (Antonella Palmisano, Marcel Jacobs, Lorenzo Simonelli, Sara Fantiniu, Filippo Tortu, Fausto Desalu, Lorenzo Patta) plus the technical director Antonio La Torre.
European athletics championships: Battocletti gold in the women’s 10,000 metres
The Italian Nadia Battocletti won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters race at the European Championships in Rome. The Trentino athlete had already won the 5,000m race. For Italy it is the ninth gold of Rome 2024.
Silver medal in the women’s 10,000m race for the Dutch Diane Van Es, third for the British Megan Keith, who preceded the other Italian Federica Del Buono (4th). In 30’51″32 Battocletti set the new Italian record.
Even President Sergio Mattarella stood upin the grandstand of the Olympic stadium, to applaud, together with Malagò and Abodi, the Italian Nadia Battocletti who was doing the lap of honor with the Italian flag on her shoulders, after winning the women’s 10,000 meters race.
Battocletti then went up to the stands to meet the head of state.
European athletics championships: Sibilio is silver in the 400 hurdles, an Italian record
The Italian Alessandro Sibilio won the silver medal in the 400 hs race of the European Championships in Rome, running in 47″50, a new Italian record. Gold went to the Norwegian Karsten Warholm.
Bol gold in the women’s 400m hurdles, Folorunso is fifth
Femke Bol dominates the women’s 400 meters hurdles, winning gold and setting a championship record. The Dutchman finished in 52.49 ahead of the Frenchwoman Louise Maraval and the other Dutchwoman Cathelin Peeters. Only fifth, however, was the Italian Ayomide Folorunso who failed to win the medal, finishing her race in 55.20.
