On the initiative of the CAI of Vicenza and the Historical Institute of the Resistance and the Contemporary Age of Vicenza “Ettore Gallo” (Istrevi), 80 years after the death of the partisan Toni, the Cammino Giuriolo was born, from the Asiago Plateau to Campogrosso.

A physical and spiritual journey in the footsteps of Captain Toni, from Malga Fossetta, on the ALTopiano of the Seven Municipalities, up to Campogrossowhere a celebration is planned in front of his tombstone. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the death of Antonio Giuriolothe partisan “Toni” who fell in Lizzano di Belvedere on 12 December 1944, the CAI of Vicenza, of which he was a member, and Istrevi planned aextraordinary edition of the civil pilgrimage to the places of the Piccoli Maestri, Sunday 16 June in Campogrosso. The event will be preceded by the inauguration of a path that 19 members of the CAI of Vicenza will follow for the first time from 13 to 16 June, along the paths that Giuriolo followed while fleeing from the tragic roundup of Malga Fossetta on 5 June 1944.

In the spring of 1944 the Little Masters, led by Toni Giuriolo, were in fact on the Sette Comuni Plateauwhere they choose Malga Fossetta as the base camp for their operations.

On 5 June 1944, an exceptionally large-scale Nazi-fascist raid began which dispersed the group. In the end Malga Fossetta is set on fire, some of the partisans are killed, Captain Toni is missing. He, having escaped the roundup, alone and without news of his companions, after a long march without any support points, with a wounded hand and without food, reaches Campogrosso. Here he meets his friend Anna Correale, who manages the refuge, then Maria Setti, the group’s courier, and his brother Libero.

To remember those tragic events, 80 years after the death of Toni Giuriolo, Istrevi has moved the annual civil pilgrimage from Malga Fossetta to Campogrosso.

Contextually The Cai of Vicenza has created the “Cammino Giuriolo”: 80 kilometers of paths and over 4 thousand meters of altitude difference which, in the four days preceding the civil pilgrimage, a group of members will follow in memory of the escape of Captain “Toni”.

There are no documents that precisely attest Giuriolo’s route, but numerous reconnaissances carried out by the Vicenza CAI group have made it possible to identify the most probable route he took.

The route will also be described on a website and in a guide, available to all hikers who wish to retrace it from now on.

On June 16th at 10 am, a meeting is scheduled between the group of hikers and the participants in the 2024 civil pilgrimage, to carry out the last stretch of the journey together, from the Pasubio Ossuary to the Città di Schio refuge, in Campogrosso, where will hold the closing ceremony.

Upon arrival, after greetings from the authorities, interventions are expected Renato CamurriUniversity of Verona, and of the writer Giuseppe Mendicino.

They will alternate readings by the La Piccionaia theater company and musical interludes by the Marzotto Musical Complex of Valdagno. The event will end with a tribute to Antonio Giuriolo in front of the memorial dedicated to him.

The initiative was supported by the Province of Vicenza, the Municipality of Vicenza, the Municipality of Arzignano, the Municipality of Recoaro Terme. The CAI, the Olympic Academy, the Bertoliana Library, the Anpi, the Avl, the Fiap, the Aned, the Anei collaborated with Istrevi for the event.
