Wildlife, two road accidents a day

Almost two road accidents a day in April involving wild animals. This is the decidedly high figure that emerges from the monthly report of the activity carried out by the Provincial Police of Sondrio. There were 56 accidents of this type reported last month; mostly the animals involved are deer, 17 cases, and roe deer, 12 cases. And accidents may increase in the coming period, great attention must be paid.

The commander of the provincial police, Piermario Pollieno, explains that “the presence of still significant quantities of snow at high altitude keeps the ungulates on the plain and on the slopes immediately above, preventing them from rising in altitude, especially in the middle and upper valleys. This detail also leads us to deduce that the births which usually take place between the end of April and May at high altitude, this year could occur on flat ground or at altitudes just above the flat ground, with a consequent strong presence of ungulates, even small ones, and an increase of their presence on valley bottom roads or first hills”.

«Greater attention is therefore recommended when traveling the roads of the Province, especially from dusk to the first light of dawn» is the appeal of Chief Commissioner Pollieno.

The provincial police report also includes the presence of the bear, which in April preyed on an apiary and three goats. Finally, two hooded crows tested positive for West Nile fever, the West Nile virus.
