“The judicial events affecting Liguria, with the involvement of leading political figuresrisk once again undermining citizens’ trust in the institutions – is the association’s comment – If the accusations were to be confirmed, a worrying picture would emerge in which private interests would have prevailed over the democratic mandate received in the vote”.
Libera Liguria then recalled the heart of the investigation: a suspect widespread corruption system, with contracts and concessions controlled in exchange for favors and illicit financing. And among the crimes contested there is also that of exchange votewhich involves Matteo Cozzani, chief of staff and Toti’s right-hand man, in relation to contacts with the Riesi community of Genoa.
“If confirmed, the exchange vote would represent a betrayal of the popular mandate and a serious blow to democracy – Libera points out – Politics cannot be bent to the personal profit of a few, but must serve the common good and the general interest. Faced with this alarming situation, it is necessary that citizens are vigilant and active. The defense of democratic institutions and values also involves greater awareness and a concrete commitment to monitoring the work of one’s representatives. It is essential that politics regains ownership of its role, based on principles of transparency, sobriety and rigor. The relationship between elected officials and voters must be based on mutual trust and respect. Only in this way will it be possible to regain lost credibility and build a better future for Liguria and for the entire country”.
“We cannot allow the role of the voter to be reduced to mere instrument of exchange – the note concludes – Politics has the duty to reflect the will of the people and to work for the common good.
