Hydrogen sulphide, as was suspected given the dynamics of the accident and the absence of masks, would be the cause of the death of the five workers in Casteldaccia in the Palermo area. The victims had completely obstructed lungs, according to the results of the first autopsies on three of the five victims, Epifanio Alsazia, Giuseppe La Barbera and Ignazio Giordano. When they went underground one after the other, without precautions, even though by contract they should have remained on the surface, they would have inhaled the gas released by the fermentation of the sewage, a fatal result according to the analyzes of the forensic medicine institute of the Palermo Polyclinic. The owner of the Quadrifoglio company for which 4 of the victims worked, Nicolò Di Salvo, is being investigated for the deaths. He is charged with manslaughter aggravated by the violation of accident prevention regulations and with very serious negligent personal injury aggravated to the detriment of the only surviving employee. The man is still in a reserved prognosis, hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Emergency Department of the Polyclinic. The autopsies on the other two dead workers, Roberto Raneri and Giuseppe Miraglia, will instead be carried out tomorrow.
