With the delivery of approximately 700 liters of used cooking oil to the parish of Priora, the three ecological Sundays organized by the environment department of the Municipality of Sorrento and the Penisolaverde company which manages urban waste ended this morning. In total, the liters collected in the three days, which took place on April 7th in Piazza Lauro, on the 21st in Casarlano and today in Priora, were over 2,300 liters.
For every 10 liters delivered, the administration gave virtuous citizens 1 bottle of extra virgin olive oil produced by local companies. An incentive already used in past years and which has brought increasingly gratifying results in terms of the disposal of domestic waste oils.
Confirming the good result achieved is Luigi Di Prisco, president of the Sorrento City Council who is the protagonist of the environmental policies of the Sorrento administration. “After years of commitment and awareness aimed at the recovery of waste oil, but more generally at respect and protection of the environment, important steps have been taken in terms of citizen participation and the quantities of waste oil collected, which create harmful damage to the ‘environment if poured into the tap at home, are a demonstration of this.
in fact, from year to year we break new records”, underlined Di Prisco.
“Thanks to everyone’s commitment – continues the president of the Sorrento City Council – we always manage to improve the collection data and this is the result of a collective effort. Obviously, there is still a lot to do as some citizens are often attracted only by the incentive of extra virgin olive oil which is given for every 10 liters of used oil collected, diverting attention somewhat from the purpose of the initiative. But it is also true that this activity has contributed to developing notable participation on an issue that would otherwise never be in the spotlight.
