Prices up by up to 20% for various seafood products this week. This is due to the bad weather at the beginning of May which is severely limiting activities at sea, consequently impacting the price lists. This was confirmed to ANSA by the analysis of Bmti, the Italian telematic commodity exchange, in the wholesale markets.

In particular, the prices of anchovies are rising which, due to the scarcity of the quantities caught, today cost from 5 to 7 euros/kg, compared to the 2-3 euros/kg for which they are usually sold in the busiest periods. fish. To aggravate the situation, the fishing ban reserved for flying boats in the Adriatic Sea in recent days is added. The situation for mud mullets is few and expensive, up to + 20% compared to 12 months ago, ranging from 7 to 10 euros/kg, while rock mullets between 15 and 20 euros/kg.

Squid has also been in short supply in wholesale markets for a few weeks: limited fishing activities have further accentuated this shortage, pushing imports, in particular from Morocco and Holland; a situation that has led to a price increase of approximately 20% compared to the same period of 2023 and a shift in demand towards squid which, equally, is having an increase of 20% compared to last year, costing from 12 to 15 euros/kg.

Usually, in the event of adverse weather conditions, consumer demand shifts to farmed products, which are still available and with stable prices compared to 2023. Salmon trout farmed in Italy is around 5.80 euros/kg, sea bass, instead, for small pieces up to 600 g, around 13 euros/kg. One thing is certain, the end of the disruptions will bring back a situation of regularity in sales and, consequently, in prices.
