Three places of Zhuhaia city in Guangdong province, in the south of China, have issued a red warning for rain storms, the highest level of this weather warning system in China. The city, in fact, was hit by torrential rains. At 1pm local time today, Saturday 4 May, according to the city’s meteorological office, rainfall in 24 hours had exceeded 250mm in eight stations, of which five exceeded 300mm. In the Doumen district, rainfall in one hour had exceeded 100mm at 8 in the morning.

The Traffic Department said some stretches of roads in the city were already flooded, and residents were advised to stay indoors. The images arriving from Zhuhai are impressive: cars submerged in water in the streets and even thehospital heavily flooded.

In addition to Doumen, two other places in the city – Xiangzhou district and Zhuhai National Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone – also issued red warnings for rainstorms.

China’s National Meteorological Center today renewed the yellow warning for rainstorms, as heavy downpours are expected to hit several parts of the country, including Guangdong. China has a four-level, color-coded weather warning system, with red being the most severe level, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
