The heartbreaking stories of the rescuers

Sid Watkinsthe most famous doctor in the history of Formula 1, as well as a great friend of Ayrton, tried until the end to dissuade him from running that damned race in Imolathe previous day, when Roland died during qualifying Ratzenbergerwent to Seine he said: “What do you like to do besides pilot?”when the Brazilian replied: “Fish”the Briton replied: “Why don’t you retire and let’s go fishing together?”

In the documentary produced by Netflix that celebrates Senna Watkins he also tells us about the moments immediately after the accident: “We took him out of the cockpit, took off his helmet and intubated him to let him breathe. From the neurological signs I realized that the trauma to his head would have been fatal. Then he let out a sigh and his body relaxed. It was at that moment that, I’m not religious, but at that moment I thought his spirit had left his body.”

In addition to the Briton, one of the first doctors to help the Brazilian champion was Giovanni Gordini who, interviewed by Il Resto Del Carlinorecounted all the moments of the intervention: “Shortly before that moment there had already been an accident on the straight and I had gone near the grandstand to check how the operations were proceeding then Mauro Bagshistoric coordinator of 118, saw the accident and uttered only three words on the radio ‘Senna Tamburello accident’. I immediately took a Vespa and catapulted myself there.”

“Some of my colleagues had already started the maneuvers. Sid was there Watkinschief medical officer of the FIA e you could hear Senna breathing on his own. On the circuit we had the helicopter available and speaking with Watkins we requested their intervention. Once we got on board we performed a tracheotomy on him and immediately left for the Ospedale Maggiore di Bologna. The flight was followed live worldwide with constant updates regarding the conditions Seine“.

The patient was very serious. Everyone at the hospital was informed and the head doctor was coordinating the operations. As soon as we arrived, we did one CT scan to Ayrton and it was devastating. The level of damage the driver had suffered was immediately seen, from the damage to the suspension arms and the various skull and neck fractures. We did everything we could to save his life, but then the encephalogram went flat, forcing everyone to confirm his death.”

His memories and the goals achieved have remained, remain today, and will also remain indelibly imprinted in the minds and hearts of everyone in the future, a bit like that hotel room number 200 in which Senna slept on his last night and which since that day it has stood still in time with the furniture still from thirty years ago.
