Trieste – The regional council of associations of people with disabilities and their families of Friuli Venezia Giulia has issued a statement following the statements of the Northern League candidate in the European elections, who had spoken of “separate classes for disabled students”.

The text of the press release

The regional council of associations of people with disabilities and their families by its statute is apolitical and non-partisan and for this reason does not want to be involved in the electoral political debate, but cannot abstain from taking a position when learning the news, broadcast by all the media , by General Vannacci, candidate for the European Parliament, who talks about “separate classes for disabled students”.

A serious statement, which can only arouse indignation and which catapults us back at least forty years into the past. We are talking first of all about people, people with a disability, who are citizens with equal rights and equal dignity, as stated in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CDPD) which was adopted on 13 December 2006 in New York by General Assembly of the United Nations and came into force on 3 May 2008 and is the law of the Italian state with Law 3 March 2009 n. 18.

Scholastic and social inclusion as an absolute, affirmed and non-negotiable value, the result of long battles of the associative world and families. It is inclusion that measures the degree of civilization of a community, because diversity is always a resource!

The Consulta endorses the statement of the vice president of the Italian bishops, Monsignor Francesco Savino, who asserts “I don’t make it a political question but a cultural one, of civilization. A similar vision, which discards and isolates differences, is a weakness for democracy and coexistence, and blocks civil progress. Behind it there is a racist conception of life. This is the ridge on which, today, we are called to decide which side we are on.”

The Council strongly states that differentiated classes do not exist and will not exist as a theme. The silence of the minister for disability in this regard is also surprising, unlike other national and local political leaders, including the president of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia Massimiliano Fedriga who expressed himself with “unacceptable statements”.

The President Mario Brancati
