Lorenzo Sonego the derby is given away 2nd round against his friend and doubles partner Jannik Sinner. The Turin native, number 52 in the world, wins a match in the main draw for the first time at Madrid Open thanks to success without stories against Richard Gasquet, former Top 10 number 116 in the world, beaten 6-2, 7-5. So the celebration was ruined for the transalpine player who was playing there match number 1000 on the circuit ATP in the main draw. Sonego will therefore face Sinner on Saturday: the previous four, all won by the South Tyrolean. The two, however, never crossed paths on earth.

Startup without history, with Sonego dominating a Gasquet without weapons: the blue flies 4-0 and closes 6-2 in 28′ after losing a paltry nine points overall. Lorenzo saves three dangerous break points at the start of the second set, the Frenchman finds his shots again and stay in touch. One is fatal to him missed pass in the 11th gamewhen Sonego scores the break which allows him to close the score in less than an hour and a half of play.
