In 2019, the year of Covid, French President Macron declared that “NATO is brain dead”. Today, he repeats that he is evaluating the opportunity to send military troops to defend the Ukrainian territories against Russia. Whether he refers to French troops or rather to European troops, as already before 2019 whose constitution he has always hoped for, current events instead show that what is hoped for has no possibility or comparison in today’s reality. And therefore, it is reasonable to assume that he is referring to the first hypothesis, namely the sending of French troops, possibly in addition to the bombing of Russian territories with English weapons, according to Premier Cameron’s latest statements.

But this warmongering option, as reiterated by the Union’s representative bodies and the leaders of the other major European countries, is not the position of the European Union.

The elections for the renewal of the European Parliament will take place in a month, and almost all opinion leaders agree on the hypothesis of a shift of the majority to the right. But, even if this were not the case, they all still agree on the hypothesis that the outcome of the elections will determine which side – between Macron’s “progressives” and Meloni’s “conservatives” – will act as and provide greater support for the EPP-PSE government axis, shifting the majority from the center to the left or right.

Therefore, there is no doubt whatsoever that in Italy both sides, both the majority and the opposition, support Meloni’s position in whole or in part, that is, a clear no to the sending of Italian troops and attack weapons into the conflict, both Russian-Ukrainian and also Israeli-Palestinian.

It therefore seems appropriate, also in compliance with the Constitution, to vote for those who are decidedly against an Italian intervention in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, strengthening a position, which we can also define as anti-Macronian, in Europe.
