“Grandma please help mom.” She falls into the trap and they take away all the gold in Jesi

JESI «Grandma please help mum, she’s ashamed to call you but she’s at the post office with the Carabinieri…». The voice of the 20-year-old grandson who, excitedly, calls his grandmother begging her to give gold and money to the postmaster to clear up some insolvencies. And on her phone I land the director of the post office who informs her of the situation and the urgency of remedying it otherwise her daughter would have been arrested. A double insistent cross-hammering, on the landline and on the cell phone, which prevented the elderly 86-year-old from thinking.

The trap

So much so that, when that good-looking young man, with his polite and affable manner, showed up at her door, without batting an eyelid she handed him gold, jewellery, cash and even opened the safe for him. Memories of a life with an economic value of around 10 thousand euros, the emotional one much more. It’s another story of an ignoble scam against a single woman, the one the victim tells us in tears. Scared, shocked. She was full of shame and understandable confusion for what happened to her on Tuesday, around 12.30 in a populous neighborhood like Via Fausto Coppi. Precisely to her who lives alone because she is still lucid and independent, and who just a month ago had thwarted an attempted scam with the Amazon package scam. «I don’t understand how they could do it – says the old woman – I have always been alert, my children always recommend me not to open up to strangers and not to give information over the phone. I’ve never fallen for it, but this time… the voice was my nephew’s, I’m sure of it. How can you not help a nephew?”.

The story

The two scammers managed to keep the two telephone numbers busy at the same time, so that the elderly woman could not call her children or 112. They waited for the domestic worker to leave to ring the doorbell, posing as the so-called director of Jesi Post Office. «He was a handsome young man, between 40 and 45 years old with a clean face, smiling and very kind – the victim continues – he was well dressed, he had a bag over his shoulder. She told me not to worry that she would help my daughter. I made him sit in the kitchen, I gave him 300 euros that I had on hand but he said that it wasn’t enough then… oh God I don’t know how I could… I opened the safe and gave him all the gold I had: bracelets , yellow and white gold pendants, a gold Madonna, a pearl necklace, my grandmother’s brooches, my father’s cufflinks, my father’s and grandmother’s wedding ring, a pocket watch… and many other valuables that I kept with love. They took away all my lifelong family memories.” Yesterday afternoon the family filed a complaint at the Carabinieri station in Jesi, investigations have already started. Maximum alertness is recommended for the elderly. It’s a hunt for scammers.
