The foil player from Potenza Francesca Palumbo on the top step of the podium in the stage of Hong Kong from the Fencing World Cup.
The female quartet of the coach Stefano Cerioni – of which Palumbo is part together with ad Arianna Errigo, Martina Favaretto And Alice Volpi – dominated the match by winning gold thanks to the success in the final against France.
The Italian women’s quartet started the day with the round of 16 win against Singapore with a score of 45-16. In the quarterfinals they beat Poland 45-30 and in the semifinals they dominated the match from the start, finishing 45-32 against Ukraine. Team Italy was also perfect in the final against France.
The match for the gold saw the blues ahead from the first to the last thrust with the 45-30 success and the second consecutive victory after the one in Tbilisi 15 days ago.
Silver medal, however, for the Italian men’s team – Guillaume Bianchi, Alessio Foconi, Filippo Macchi and Tommaso Marini -, who in the first match without Daniele Garozzo were able to assert themselves, only giving in to the hosts in the last act.
The men debuted in the round of 16 in a very tough match, managing to get through with the last hit scored by Marini for the 45-44. There was also a lot of balance in the quarterfinal attack against Egypt, which they won 45-42. The Azzurri then reached the final thanks to 45-37 against China, while the setback came in the final against the hosts from Hong Kong 45-41. A silver which however brings fundamental points for the ranking on which the scoreboard of the Paris 2024 Olympics will be made up.
In the three days of competitions in Hong Kong, Italy won two golds (Bianchi in the men’s individual and the women’s team), two silvers (Elena Tangherlini and the men’s team) and two bronzes (Arianna Errigo and Tommaso Marini).
