Mayor Pisani: “Citizens are not alone, they can count on the institutions and law enforcement agencies, always present in the area and in synergy with each other to guarantee safety”
Law enforcement and institutions together to warn citizens against the increasingly frequent scams, especially perpetrated against the elderly and vulnerable groups. The meeting promoted by the Carabinieri, in collaboration with the Municipality of Casali del Manco, entitled “Watch out for scams”, was held yesterday in the municipal library of Spezzano Piccolo, during which it was offered to citizens a real decalogue to protect yourself from scams that are carried out in person, on the telephone, by post and via the Internet.
The meeting was moderated by the journalist Gianluca Pasqua. Speakers included Mayor Francesca Pisani, who brought greetings from the municipal administration, the Commander of the Casali del Manco Carabinieri station Antonio Sica, the head of Codacons Cosenza Pierpaolo Rodighiero, the Councilor for Culture and Public Education Giulia Leonetti and the Head of the Welfare sector of the Municipality Antonio Tiberi. During the well-attended event, some citizens, victims of scam attempts, also spoke and gave their testimonies. The speakers explained that there are various types of scam attempts, that we must always be wary of appearances and protect the most fragile categories, including minors. The scammer, usually distinguished and friendly, often claims to be an official of the Post Office, INPS, of a charity, or even a lawyer, a representative of the Municipality or other public bodies, an employee of a service provider company such as electricity, water or gas and sometimes a member of the police force. It is essential that citizens know that these people do not show up at people’s homes without warning: any visit must always be preceded and guaranteed by a communication with a reason. Furthermore, it was explained that a badge is not enough to confirm the identity of the interlocutor and that even on the telephone or on the Internet we must be certain of the identity of the person who contacts us, before revealing personal and sensitive data. In any case, it is advisable to verify what we are told by contacting the organization or company concerned and promptly notifying 112 or the police even just in case of doubt.
“The message we wanted to send with this initiative – stated the Mayor Pisani – is that the citizens of Casali del Manco are not alone. They can count at any time on the institutions and law enforcement agencies, always present and attentive in the area and always in synergy with each other to guarantee safety and tangibly show them their closeness in case of difficulty. We also underlined that raising awareness and word of mouth are very important – added the mayor – so much so that we asked those present to warn and warn relatives, friends and acquaintances, in order to always maintain high attention”.
