Centenary of Puccini’s death, meetings promoted by Monteverdi

To honor the 100 years of the death of Giacomo Puccini the “Claudio Monteverdi” Conservatory of Cremona has programmed a series of cultural events making use of the most authoritative experts on the composer’s life and musical production.

The links between the genius from Lucca and Cremona are multiple:
– Giacomo Puccini is a student of Amilcare Ponchielli at the Milan Conservatory
– Giuseppe Bianchi Cremonini, illustrious citizen of Cremona, is the tenor who determines the sensational success of the world debut of Manon Lescaut at the Teatro Regio in Turin (1893) and of the premiere at La Scala (1894). Puccini himself defines him as “my sublime Des Grieux”. Cremonini is also the protagonist of the premières of La Bohème and Tosca at the MET in New York.
– Ottorino Vertova, a leading figure in Cremonese musical culture, was called directly by Arturo Toscanini to instruct the MET choir in New York on the occasion of the premiere of La fanciulla del west (1910).

The cycle of conferences, concerts, exhibitions and interviews scheduled will highlight various aspects of Giacomo Puccini’s personality and musical production, also thanks to the unpublished material collected in Italy and the USA.

The most accredited scholars and authors of important publications will be invited: Michele Girardi, Fabio Sartorelli, Emanuele Senici, Pietro Zappalà. To give an international flavor to the whole initiative, a conference is planned Harvey Sachsprofessor at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and an exclusive interview with the choreographer and director Carolyn Choawife of the Oscar winner Anthony Minghelladirector of one of the most fascinating productions of Madama Butterfly.
